Batman: Arkham Asylum

I think I've shown you some of the brilliant art work in this graphic novel, there's references to tarot cards, insanity and the moon in the beautiful drawings....but there's also some interesting dialogue to get us thinking:





(as two face destroys a pack of tarot cards stacked) "who cares for you, you're nothing but a pack of cards"





"He's a special case. Some of us feel he may be beyond treatment. In fact, we're not even sure if he can be properly defined as insane! Some days he's a mischeivous clown, others he's a psychotic killer. He has no REAL personality"





"I want them to know what it's like to have sticky fingers pick through the dirty corners of his mind"





"The sign of Pisces. Pisces! The astrological attribution of The Moon card in the tarot pack! The symbol of trial and initiation. Death and rebirth"





Grant morrison on the structure & themes of B:AA -

"the story is woven tightly around a small number of symbolic elements, which combine and recombine throughout, as if in a dream: the Moon, the Shadow, the Mirror, the Tower, and the Mother's Son. The construction of the story was influenced by the architecture of a house — the past and the tale of Amadeus Arkham forms the basement levels. Secret passages connect ideas and segments of the book. There are upper stories of unfolding symbol andmetaphor. We were also referencing sacred geometry, and the plan of the Arkham House was based on the Glastonbury Abbey and Chartres Cathedral. The journey through the book is like moving through the floors of the house itself. The house and the head are one."









Francis Bacon

I had mentioned before about looking at Francis Bacon's art as a good exploration of the mind of a mad man! Could use his art style as something the moon might draw: could fit in as disturbing imagery in the mood board perhaps?

He also explores the theme of transforming faces in his art so there are some interesting self/other portraits where it is like a painted version of what we might want to do for the Moon characters multi character face scene.
